Poetry: “Flame Retardant Heart”

Yet another foray into the Daily Prompt world.

Do you know how tough flame retardant is? It may look pretty when a DC-10 drops a load, but it’s a nasty pink color once it’s landed on something. It also stains big time.

Needless to say I don’t like the color pink, and yet…

pink stains wood and muscle,
hard to chew, hard to grasp.
easier this way
to succumb to that fiery harbinger
no matter its reality, no matter yours.
even now candlelight calms me,
jagged prisms dancing on fleshy structure.
the flames came home
but they couldn’t take me,
couldn’t take all of me.
there are clouds all around.
can I sing? can I scream?
even under protection
can you still set me aflame?
because one day
when the pink fades
you’ll have to.
