Poem: “clotted spine”

When people fail to understand your tragedy but critique you anyways.
When people think their advice will save your world when all it does is gratify their egos.
When people bring up your tragedy as an icebreaker and expect you to talk about it.
When people say, “I can’t even imagine.”
When you want to say, “I’ll make you imagine.”

All this and more…this is for us, this is for you.

the outsiders said,
try not to think about it.
this I could not do.
my illness was cement,
my will a warped sheet of glass.

the outsiders said,
you will move on.
this I could not do.
I still hail that storm,
star-shot eyes brimming gray.

the outsiders said,
try talking to someone.
this I could not do.
a leaf of ash on flesh,
clarity burning fast and gone.

the outsiders said,
stay strong.
this I could not do.
under that dead lung sky
my spine and
mind gave
in.
